H.W.C. THE HELMVAARDERS
The club organising the 2011 EK is H.W.C. the Helmvaarders. This canoe club has been involved in canoeing since 1938 With 110 members. The Helmvaarders is a small club. Nevertheless, the Helmvaarders delivers a number of slalom champions every year. With regards to canoe polo, the club is best known for it’s organization of the annual HIT tournament. Every year in April, approximately 60 teams from 6 to 8 European countries come over to Helmond to compete for the titles. The organization of this tournament was the reason for the ECA to ask HWC if they would organize the ECC for club teams. We are very proud to organize, a large international tournament, such as the ECC Canoe Polo for the first time.
HELMOND
Helmond is a regional city with a population of approximately 90,000 inhabitants. The city has a rich industrial past and became large through the textile en metal industry. In the last decade, Helmond has, as part of the de Brainport region, developed into an innovative trend setter with regards to mobility. The strong economical sectors of the city are the automotive industry and food technology.
Recently this brainport region is called out the smartest region in the world 2011 by the Intelligent Community Forum!
The city entre of Helmond houses a medieval castle. This castle, which has been a town hall for many years, will be the place where the official opening ceremony, the team captains meeting and the referee’s meeting will be held. On the other side of the “Zuid Willemsvaart”, the canal which played an important role in the economical development of the city, is the current town hall, Boscotondo. This building is not only functional as town hall, but also has a cinema and exhibition centre. The dominant workmanship of the building (built in 2004) was developed by the Italian architect Adolfo Natalin.
FOOD AND DRINK
There are many different restaurants in the centre of Helmond. There are Italian restaurants on the Steenweg (‘Sicilia’) and the Havenplein (‘La Perla’), Chinese restaurant on the Market (Markt) (‘Kota Radja’) and the Marktstraat (‘Indrapoera’) a Greek restaurant on Zuid Koninginnewal. For French cuisine, there are restaurants on the Markt (Hotel Lambert), the Steenweg (Hotel West Ende), on the Koninginnewal (Charlie Browns Place) and on Steenweg (Het Parlement). At the Havenplein are also many restaurants.
TOURISM
In case you are staying in Helmond, the Tourist information (VVV) is open during working days and Saturday mornings. The tourist information is located in the city centre in the new library near the Speelhuis (theatre).
MARKET
On Saturday is it especially busy in the centre of Helmond. This is when the weekly market is held. This market starts at 8:00am and is finished by 4:00pm.
ILLNESS OR INJURY
During the tournament, there are medical officers present (first aid). In case urgent medical assistance is needed, one can easily be taken into the Elkerliek Hospital. In this hospital, surgeons and/or doctors will provide the help that is required, depending upon the degree of the injury. There is also a chemistry.
The telephone number of the Emergency office of the hospital is : 0900-8861. If there is direct and urgent medical help needed, the ambulance can be contact via emergency number 112.
PARKING IN THE CITY OF HELMOND
You can park in the centre of Helmond in one of the many parking garages. The garages are located in Doorneind (Molenstraat), the Watermolenwal (City-sporthal), the Elzas Passage, Boscotondo (entrance via Steenweg).
Please note that parking fees are required and take care of the times that you are required to pay.

If necessary, the organization will help you in situations where the police is needed. If you would like to personally contact the police, you can call them on 0900-8844. If you required urgent and direct help, you can also call the emergency number 112.
